This collection from Hekne is based on the colours of the Mallard, a dabbling duck widely distributed across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Actually it is thought to be the most abundant duck on Earth.
The Mallard is 50-65 centimetres long and weights up to 1400 grams. While the female bird has a mainly brown-speckled plumage, the male is easily recognisable with his palette of strong colours: glossy green head, yellow bill, brown chest, white collar and iridescent blue speculum feathers.
The duck is commonly found close to water, where it dives down to 1-2 metres deep searching for food.
How it's made
Good working conditions
This product is knitted in a small factory in Lithuania, following European standards and salaries. The wool fabric is woven in Portugal. The GOTS certified part is wowen in India.
Reducing waste
Hekne never buy big amounts of fabric for production, to make sure they don’t end up with excess materials. They don’t mind using the same materials for different collections if it means using what they already have in stock, and they want to give their garments a life that lasts longer than one season.
Partly GOTS Certified
The production of the fabric holds GOTS Standards, which makes sure there are good working conditions in both the weaving and the colouring process. The shell fabric is wowen in Turkey and coloured in Germany, both under GOTS standard. The lining fabric is wowen in India, also under GOTS Standard.
Partly organic
The fabric that is GOTS certified in this product is organic. This means that it is grown in compliance with organic agricultural standards that protect the environment and wildlife. Natural methods are used to manage soil quality, diseases, and other issues that arise during the farming process. It is not made with use of synthetic fertilizers or herbicides that strip land of nutrients, and artificial chemicals and GM (Genetically Modified) crops are banned.
