How it's made
Excellent working conditions
This product is handcrafted, one bag at a time, by an artisan in the Spanish Andalusian hills. They are handmade with heart by crafters with expertise and very single product is made from scratch, until it’s completely finished.
The tanning of the leather is also done with care and focus on craftsmanship. Vegetable tanning is the most classical, authentic and environmentally friendly process of dying leather, where an ancient-old technique is used, handed down from father to son for over 200 years. It requires experienced craftsmen and is a time-consuming process, which adds costs, but also enables them to achieve the superior quality that characterizes these bags.
Vegetable tanned leather – organic process
The leather used for this product is vegetable tanned in a family-owned tannery, based in the heart of the leather region in Tuscany, Italy. They mix artisan recipes with state-of-the-art technology and are a proud member of the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium (http://www.pellealvegetale.it/en/consortium/) ; a small group of tanneries who share the same standards of production, strictly monitored to ensure only a low impact is made to the environment.
Vegetable tanned leather earned its name because only natural tannins are used, those found in tree barks, fruits and leaves, and usual use of Chrome is left out of the process. This ensures the the wonderful scent of 100% organic vegetable tanned leather, the unique characteristics and makes it easily distinguishable. As a sign of authenticity, no two items are the same, and the leather will gain character, reveal imperfections and reflect the individual owner’s lifestyle.
Organic cotton
All lining of these bags are done using certified organic cotton.
Use of organic holistic leather
The leather used for your bag is from farmed cows in the Tuscan region, where the whole animal is used for food-purposes.
Non Toxic
There are no use of chemicals in this production.
Supporting traditional Craftsmanship
High up in the Spanish Andalusian hills is a beautiful white-stone village that is known for its 200 year-old expertise in leather craftsmanship. In this village of Ubrique, it’s all about the leather craftsmanship. More than half of the town works in the many leather workshops that are located here. And it is in this unique place that your bag is crafted, in a family-owned workshop who specialize in luxury leather goods.
Each bag is handmade, one at a time. Attention to detail is important and the craftsmen and suppliers who strive to work as artisans and achieve this are hard to find. And that is why Jerfertti proudly and consciously support this type of craftsmanship
Biodegradable
Your bag is high quality and meant to last for a lifetime, but if you one day should decide to get rid of it, you can dismantle it and biodegrade the cotton and leather together with other biodegradable material. The zipper and metal pieces can be used again for other purposes.
